The last Mitzvah in the Torah, number 613, is the Mitzvah to write a Sefer Torah (Torah Scroll). This positive commandment requires that every man should own his own Sefer Torah. According to some authorities, another way to fulfill this Mitzvah is by buying religious books which contain or discuss the Torah.
| Who can write a Sefer Torah? | How many letters are there? | What do I look for? |
| A Sefer Torah can only be written by a trained Sofer (Scribe). |
There are 304,805 letters in a Sefer Torah. If one letter is extra or missing it renders the Torah invalid. |
Choosing the right Sefer Torah is important. The Sofer should be a G-d fearing individual, with a nice handwriting. Consult with an independent Sofer to help you in your decision. A Sefer Torah is usually a costly investment. |
