The Mitzvah of wearing Tefillin (phylacteries) is Mitzvah number 421 and 422 of the 613 commandments. The Mitzvah has 2 parts, the wearing of the Tefillin on the arm and on the head.

| The Mitzva is incumbent on all Jewish males over the age of 13 (Bar Mitzva). | The Tefillin are worn daily (except for the Shabbos (Sabbath) and Jewish Holidays). |
Inside the Tefillin are scrolls with portions of the Torah written on them. The scrolls must be written by a trained Sofer (Scribe). The ink and parchment used must also follow special guidelines. For a primer about Tefillin, see Tefillin by Rabbi Aryeh Kaplan (published by NCSY). |
There are 1594 letters in each of the Tefillin. If one letter is extra or missing it renders the Tefillin invalid. | Look for Tefillin which are called gasos, made from cowhide. These are more expensive, but are well worth it in the long run. Tefillin should last for many years, and other leathers wear out quickly. | The arm Tefillin are put on first. Keep in mind that a lefty gets different Tefillin than a right handed person. The head Tefillin are put on last.
